Contents ideas

Most contents pages follow the same layout and are very simple in how they are presented. I have taken two from Kerrang which are similar in ways however they have different ways of presenting it. The one to the right side is the layout I would like to go for because it has a variety of picture which has a number that links with the contents of what’s in the magazine. The second Kerrang one, below has the main picture right at the top, and a fewer ones to side. This focus mainly on the main story and picture it referees imitating how a normal contents would be like. Most of it should be visual and hardly any writing so that the reader gets to be introduced and eased into the magazine rather than attacked.
As it follows the same headings and graphology, it changes as they are no long down the side in a list, but at the bottom all squashed at in four columns.
The contents page ideas that I would include will have a Varity of subheadings that will include the story underneath.

Now looking at rock sound and how they present their consents pages is very different. They only use on large image that takes up the whole page as a wallpaper. This is very UNIQUE because this magazine is not as well known. They have nor properly followed the codes and conventions of an average magazine as they are trying to break from the original layout and tried to be different.  I don’t think that I would use this style because it is so strange and well known, and if I were to start a magazine I would want to follow the stereotypical conventions so my audience do not get too confused on my magazine, even though it would lack originality. However I did pick this out because I thought that rock sound was a good magazine to analyse. It is different from kerrang as it comes out once a month, this may be why it differs and also the layout is definitely more professional and classy. It is not so in your face and packed with lots of pictures that make the reader excited as much as their audience seem to be older. I think I will bled the two ideas together to create something similar but more leanest on the kerrang style.

Production diary 14

My main focus for this week is to look at current sell lines on existing magazines such as Kerrang, Rock Sound and Metal Hammer, to see the types of writing they use, the words, and what they are about. I have looked at many of these and adapted them for my magazine yet still including their idea.
I have found that Kerrang has the best sell lines, which are catchy and interesting.

Sell line ideas

Thinking about what stories and interesting cover lines that would go on my front cover, which my audience would find interesting and make them want to buy my magazine.
The topics of which will all be music related, but also need to  connect with the audience so I will include free posters, competition offers and further relating articles with my audience.
Here are some ideas I have in mind.
  • WIN! a pain of tickets to the hottest metal festival this summer at DOWNLOAD!
  • The return of legends old rockers Papa Roach!
  • Green Day releasing 3 new albums in three smashing months
  • Exclusive news from Matt Tucks injury
  • 5 FREE exclusive live posters from your favourite bands
  • The main story feature: The Ocean's Eyes cause up a storm. "We were so caught up on the shore, we didn't see the tide comming in."
  • 20 years of rock before pop

  • PLUS! BringMeTheHorizon. LostProphets. BrandNew. La Dispute. AvengeSevenfold. Slipknot. ParkwayDrive.SleepingWithSirens and many more
Here is an example of how it would look like, I have taken this from Kerrang magazine, and it is placed right at the bottom of the page.

Following this I have also seen the common strip at the top of every Kerrang magazine which are called banners, which features one band and focus on them, with another short importaint article that would be found abou them in it.
Taking this idea, I will ulter it sligtly for my magazine however I will make it suited for my sories.

Production diary 13

In the past few days I have been thinking long and hard about my name ideas for my actually magazine. I have came up with a few and before choosing a final one I decided to take a vote on it and ask the public of my target audience. None of them chose Witnessed. 60% chose Sound Check. 20% Chose Deftoned. 8% chose Structure and 12% chose Sync.
Using this, I went for Sound Check as it was the most popular and also I personally liked the name of it, I then planed out what colour I would use, fonts and all the extra typography for this. I also found that red and dark blue suited the best.

Name Ideas

For the actual name of my magazine, I have thought about this for a long time and have taken in a great deal of consideration while coming up with a taster of names to be sampled. The name I want to portray in my magazine would have to relate to the genre of rock music and also something the audience would relate this connection with and find striking so that it would stand out in their minds.
Looking at existing rock magazine names I have found that most stick to the one word which is short and bold, and also has symbolic reasons to it. However the few do contain two words joined together, which also work in the same effect.
Following this I have come up with some original names that I could use as my brand identity for my magazine to be known by, they have be chosen carefully as to their meaning and what they represent.
They are: Sound Check, Structure, Deftoned, Witnessed and Sync.

I had gotten the idea for Sound Check because at every gig and band practice  they would do a sound check to make sure everything is in order and works. All of my audience will know what this is and means, giving it a relation to my genre already. They two words also go together in-relation of calling my magazine this because it is short, easy to remember and has a nice ring to it. Sound checks also are a before brief of how the concert should flow and what happens, testing the equipment  which could be a metaphor as my magazine is new and tests new bands, and new music which its main features are. They both have the same topical and pragmatic understanding.

Structure has come from another musical element. As you would have a structure of a song, a structure of a band, and the structure in which you perform songs by. This again is relating its name back to music elements that my audience would also pick up on and find interesting. The name is short and also has a rough, edgy look to it, as it would belong in a rock magazine. There are also bands named after this, such as "Structured, and structures" I have also taken them to get inspiration for this name.

Deftones is a pretty self explanatory name, as my genre of music would be described as being tone deaf and heavy. As the genre of rock produces loud music at a high level in which would be classed as deaf. I have come up with a name that fits this. It suggest that the magazine is heavily based on loud music, however it does have more metal connotations rather than softer rock. However this would convey my genre in the most clearest way ever if I were to chose it.

Witnessed again is a more metal name for a magazine, it sounds more gothical and horror than anything to do with music, however I did my inspiration from an existing band called "Last witness" as there kind of music is the kind you would find in my magazine, which gives it a direct link with the audience. This name is good because it implies new, raw fresh music. As if you have just witnessed a band and found out they are good, they would be in my magazine as that is one of the main features of presenting new and upcoming bands as well as your favourites.

Finally we have Syn which relates to actual music. To have a good performances and make good music, everything has to be in sync and the same paces of things. This describes my magazine to be in good order, and level with the music that it displays. The only problem I have with the name is that it sounds too technical, pop and R&B for my genre of music so my audience may get mixed this magazine up with a different one, the aim of the genre is not clear as I'd like it to be which is a big flaw to the name.

Production diary 12

I have been busy thinking about my audience and who they are and how I would target them specifically. Following this, it actually would help me with my proposal and what I will plan to do for my real magazine and what elements I wish to produce in it and what would be reverent. I have open up my ideas to a focus group and the public to test my ideas on this by making an online questionnaire. After a week I have found that this was not so much of a good idea, as people did not take it seriously and left silly answers, So I then re did this and make it private to a few people and given out by hand to improve this. I have also been thinking about names for my magazine, and the typography of it which I will later explore and put up for debate.

My proposal

The genre of my magazine is Rock, which would include its basic codes and  conventions, that are most rock magazines follow a dark colour theme and present their genre in an obvious manor. The front cover image would normally be of a high statues, well known attractive looking band, the lead singer will always be in the middle or if not centre of attention. the colour theme would be basic, and stick to two colours however a third could be introduced if necessary. The mast head should be considered to represent the genre, bold, Gothic, in your face and attacking. Then the related tag lines show follow on with the jargon of rock readers, and colloquial language in which they understand according to their idiolect. My genre would present its self in the most stereotypical way in which its readers will understand and acknowledge imminently. I propose to follow these all through when making my magazine, sticking firmly to these guidelines, however throwing in some of my own ideas to make it original.
My audience in which my magazine is targeted at would be, young to old teenagers who are 14 to 21 of age. They would mostly be girls, however they do have a fair share of boys. The reason that i have chosen to target an audience of teenagers in that age range is because, i have found the minim age to go to most top end gigs would Be 14 and readers of existing magazines come from all ages from 14 and above. I have also found that people who would buy a rock magazine would defiantly be interested in bands, gigs and what's new, so my readers would be in a young age range as they are always on their feet, out and about. 21 seems to be an appropriate end age as it signifies the final age before you have to take on full responsibility of your life, it is an age in which people would still be finding themselves and having a Good time.
Their specific psychographics would be people who have a wild passion for music and enjoy reading about it. They would also be deeply involved with bands, their lives and also music related news. As teenagers like to save money where they can, my audience will be drawn into my magazine as it will offer something in return regular, my target demographic spend their time playing instruments, listening to music, writing music, watching tv, games, drinking energy drinks, like going to concerts a lot, wear drop dead or a lot of band merch, skate or bmx, have right coloured hair, like piercings and tattoos, are different from the normal norms, are interested in band members lives, are a bit of a fan girl, eat KFC, fast food, energetic, outgoing, festival loving, people who like spending time with their friends and people who have a similar passion as them, is what unites all these hobbies as passions. Judging from my mood board, these are the kind of things that my readers would find as interest to them or things that they already do.  This then reflects on the genre of my magazine as they all support and back up the ideal of what rock is seen to be and how they are presented in their visual look as well as their personal look. These people would me A,B,C,1 manly men.
The uses and gratification theory are important to my magazine as all the elements would be placed for a reason in which my audience would react on. The main purpose for why people buy rock magazines is because they, them selves desire to once be in a band, meet a band, go and see a band live, interview a band, or just fan girl over them. The main word here is band, everything revolves around them and their music. If I chose a young, new and upcoming band to star in my magazine, then I will have used one of the gratifications, as self desirability, as they themselves would think that they could do what my models are doing because they are so reliable. Maslows hierarchy of needs also plays a part role in this, as you will see how close my audience can relate to each stages of the pyramid. There will be elements in which my audience will feel like they can connect with. To target my audience even more directly i have made a survey for my audience to answer and tell me more about what they like. (http://surveys.questionpro.com/a/TakeSurvey?id=3303151 )

The success for making a good magazine is that the readers need to enjoy reading a very close relationship with a magazine in which they want to read.  it is a very hard relationship in which media tries to replicate. The publishing company which i feel that would make this more successful would be to uses IPC as it is a British company which is liked to other American publisher. They have a large profile which sell over 30 million copies every year which is a lot of for a publishing house. They are also largely associated with newspapers as well.

I will represent my artist in the stereotypical eye of my audience to reinforce my genre and make it clear to my audience on what I am showing them. I will do this buy using a main model of a focus band that I have chosen who are a starting out rock band. They will be dressed in typical everyday casual clothes in with other band members but also teenagers wear. They would consist of baggy vests, long t shirts, hoodies, skinny jeans, a denim jacket and a beanie hat. They will be posing in their nature habitat which would be at a gig and they would be performing live. Their poses would be wild and active as the band would be performing a lively show full of energy and connecting their music with the crowd. I will then also get the band back again to do another shoot that would be used on the front cover and some double page spreads. I would set the setting for these shots to be in a field, woods or large open spaced park. Somewhere that is deserted, slightly mysterious or run downed like. I was also thinking of using a blinding setting of a busy city to show the hecticness of the band and how busy their lives are, if I can find these settings or nice views then i would use them for my photo shoot. I will always make sure that the lead singer is placed in the middle or focused on more, as this is a trend in most bands photo shoots. This will reinforce my genre because I have looked at many exsisitining bands as they have used a similar setting to show their difference and how they are fresh meat to the world. the style of clothing, pose, and facial expression in which i will capture in the shots i will take.

Production diary 11

I have been thinking a lot about what my props and costume would be like and ideas as to what they could be. Studying my genre closely  I have come up with some of the similar trends in which they wear, and what they do for their image. Following that I have taken a few ideas from each one and then added them to my final idea of what I want to do. They have given me ideas as to what i can do to reinforce my genre, as you can see in the Pezzie below. Also following my planning I have made a survey in which you can find a link to below. I have published this on social networking site, such as facebook, twitter, and tumblr so my target audience is notified.
