Production diary 10
This week have been busy looking at the institution of magazines. This has told me about the various companies of magazines such as EMAP and IPC, where are media publishing institution's, which vary in dependence. I have learnt the importance of each one and how dependent magazines differ from independent magazines, this will help me when I decide to chose which institution I want later in the production. There are certain advantages and disadvantages that I need to take into consideration however, I do plan to do more research on this to find out more.

Institution of Magazines
EMAP varies in their industry as they vary from fashion retail to architecture, environment, media and public sectors. Emap is an international and powered by the top right group which is a British media company which specialising in the business-to-buisness magazines and the event of business. The company is now owned by Apax and Guardian media group. EMAP has 20 magazines in its business-to-business portfolio which include:
- Architectural Review
- Broadcast
- Construction News
- Drapers
- Health Service Journal
- Local Government Chronicle
- Materials Recycling Week
- Nursing Times
- Retail Week
- Recycling & Waste Management
- Screen International
- IPC is another British publishing company, which is also linked to the American publisher affiliated with the communist party USA. It is also known as International publishing corporation. They also have a large portfolio selling over 30 million copies every year! Firstly published in the mid-1950s and was also dominate by other companies, participially with Associated Newspaper.
- een acquired without any
significant change in management, save for the appointment of Mirror
Group directors as chairmen. In 1963 all the companies were combined by
the creation of a parent (or "holding") company called the International Publishing Corporation (known informally as IPC). All of the existing companies would continue to exist, but as IPC subsidiaries.
Most music magazines on average would cost from £2 to £5 for just once, either monthly or weekly. We know that our target demographic would be working class, or people studying in education.
Big branding companies are published through main power houses like described as above. (AMAP, IPC) When doing my magazine i will consider weather to to use an independent institution or a world wide one. If i chose the companies like EMAP and IPC, my choices would be very limited as they would have different rights to change and edit my magazine, which could make my magazine completely different and mainstream.
On the other hand if I want to publish my magazine through independent publishers then i would have full control over what I want to put, which would make this very well unique. If i do chose to g along with this then the disadvantage would be the film wont be as well known and people won't be as interested as they will not know about it.Powerhouses are usually horizontally and vertically to promote and advertise my magazines so more people would be involved and know about this.
The most important factor to my magazine would be the front cover, this is where the audience decided whether they want to buy the magazine because it is the first glimpse they get to seeing it. Most music magazines would have a well known famous band on the front which are highly attractive to their target demographic because they would buy it because of personal references. Linking in with the graphology this is just as well as important as we like to see things with our eyes and what attracts our eyes will attract us essentially. The placing of words, images and text are very important to get it right and appealing to us.
The buzz words, tag lines and mast heads would contain a brief description of what would be inside the magazine to make the reader even more involved and interesting in buying it. They use bright colours which are bold and stand out from the other magazines, they are all competing against each other to attract the most readers so each one has to be done differently and look unique. The structure of each of these are most important as this is what shapes the magazine and gets higher sells, it is more formal to do a magazine with a high strutter which looks professional rather than unstructured and child like.

I have also looked at existing magazine names and done some research on the internet to find out where they got their name from, why they named the magazine that, when they first started publishing and where the magazine is from. I have found that Most of the magazines that I had researched were from the UK, however two were from the US. One in particular called MetalHammer was dispatched all over the world and also copied in other languages. I found this particularly interesting as this relates to the genre I wish to choose. I have researched different varieties of music to get a rough idea of what each one has done. Their names have been kept simple and catchy in order to remember them by. Each magazine's name is somehow related to their target demographic and genre of music, it really reflects what style they want to portray and is highly important.

I have now looked at the most popular colours and put together a little Prezzie to show what each one has the connotations of. I have found that my genre that I would like to do, use all dark colours, of black, white, grey and yellow. They use a mixture of colours to shows their genre and how it is presented and the stereotypical views. When making my magazine I will take these colours into account and try to use the ones that resemble Rock the most and give of certain connotations in order to make it obvious what my genre of music is and also more appealing to that audience.

This week i have researched on a lot on my genre of music and what style i want to use in my magazine. I have started by looking at two magazines that I personally read a lot and are suited for my genre. Kerrang and Rock Sound are the two that i have compared because they both show what a rock magazines looks like, but in two different ways. I have also explained how my genre is portrayed and how they do this, using the angel, shots, colours and overall graphology.

Masthead
Masthead typography analysis
Q magazine is unusual in the music magazines as this magazine
does not have an actual name but is just a letter. They have done this because
it is a short version and sound for Queue, as in you are queuing up for
something, or waiting for something to come out. This also tells us that the
magazine is up to date with new releases about what is happening. The bold
background of a solid red colour stands out from everything else. This has become
their signature colour for the magazine, where they use it throughout. The connotations of this are important, aggressive,
power, love, passion, blood, and boldness. The giant capital Q in the middle
displayed in white stands out from the red background and is really contrasting
with it. This also gives the magazine a professional look as the Q is in the
middle, and the red box is a straight square.
Kerrang have a famous style of masthead. The main colours
that are used are yellow, black and white. This basic white and black headline
shows the classic rock and roll theme. The writing is all in capitals and also
has an explication mark at the end of it to show even more emphasis and
aggression. The actually writing it’s self is also quite faded and pieces
missing, and bits of lines across each word, it gives it an unfinished, broken,
grunge look. The black background shows darkness, and mystery against the pure whitens
of the writing, this shows two sides of the story. You can tell that their
audience would be aimed at teenagers who love rock music and are aggressive and
alternative.
Rolling Stone is a world class famous magazine which caters
for all types of music. The main colour of rolling stones is actually red with
the black outline and the thick edgy stand out; it looks like the writing has
been cut out from a trophy. The actual typography
has all flicks and rounded rather than bold and capital. This is because it is diverse
for all kinds of music and can be easily adapted to a wide range of audiences. However the masthead changes the colour in
different magazines, but will still keep to the same typography and layout. The
dominate colour is red because red represents aggression, passion, boldness and
importance, it is a popular choice in the industry of music as well.
Vibe magazine is aimed for music lovers of R&N and hip
hop. They have used the colour of black as the main masthead and the background
of white to make it contrast and stand out.
The first three letters are all in capital letters however the e at the
end is not. This maybe because they have stolen the e from the grand theft auto
e. This is because that their target audience probably plays that game a lot
and this also makes it more reckonable to their target audience, this can also
make them even more persuaded to buy the magazine. Also even though the writing
is all in capitals the actual letters are round and soft to show their soft
music and bounce to the audience.
Tops of the pops are an old magazine and this also shows in
the way they have presented it. The colours of pink and yellow are very retro
and disco like. By using the yellow background with the pink outline of the
words “top of the pops” make it stand out and give it the theme of pop music.
The typography of the masthead is all in lowercase letters and soft, there are
no rough edges, and are all curved and soft which shows in pop music that
produce. This is a classic pop magazine and by using retro disco colours you
can see this.
The classic two colours of black and white show that this
magazine is a classic rock magazine. Like Kerrang they have chosen the two basic
colours, however used them in reverse. All letters are in capital however they
are not as aggressive as Kerrang, the letters are curved and rounded to show a
softer style that this kind of music is less aggressive and the audience would
be less aggressive. The white background
shows the pure of the music and the black shows the darkness of the music and
what they want to represent.
XXL magazine have followed the dominate colour of red and
used this as their background like Q magazine. They have also imitated Q magazine
with the writing being white. XXL is written in bold capital letters to show
the contrasting of the white and red background. The boldness of the writing is not as strong
and well presented as Q, as they have used a softer text that is not as cutting
edge as others to show their king of music which is aimed at rappers and
R&B music.
NME
is a classic British rock music magazine. Using the bold and well known colour
of red as the filler for the writing and a white outline really contrast and
makes the masthead stand out. By also using a black background this makes the
letters NME stand out even more and appeal well polished and Presteme. NME is written in all capital
letters which have finished in a straight edge and clear finish, each letter is
bold and straight with no curves to show it’s professional and also appeal to a
much older audience. People who would
read NME would be working class, and maybe older teenagers as the genre of
music is rather old, classic rock.
